Utazi Leaves
Utazi Leaves (Gongronema latifolium) are a well-known West African cooking herb with a distinctive bitter-sweet taste and aroma, commonly used as a spice/vegetable in Nigerian cuisine. They’re especially valued for adding a light, traditional flavor note to richly seasoned pots without overpowering the dish.
A popular way to use them is in Nsala (white soup)—many recipes recommend using only a small amount to create a faint bitter taste—plus they’re also added to pepper soup and stews, usually toward the end of cooking to keep the flavor bright. For best quality, store chilled and keep the leaves dry until you’re ready to rinse and slice.
